Hafnarborg

Needle-punched rugs created while in residency with Hafnarborg, a public art museum located in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. The large-scale photos were taken at Hleinar Nature Reserve - heathlands, lava fields & short pebble beaches within walking distance from the residence.

I walked by this ground cover in Hleinar Reserve on my first day & wanted to emulate it’s lush sprawl within my rugs.

On one of my last days, I brought my 3 completed rugs out to Hleinar to capture them on the rock face imitating a gallery wall. I “hosted” an impromptu “opening reception” in which a seal was the only attendant besides myself. As I was taking photos, adult seal popped it’s head out of the water and swam for a moment nearby - a rare occurrence in the area I learned. I took it’s presence as a good omen.
